Mac container apps compared: Oxcart, Docker Desktop, OrbStack, Colima, Podman Desktop and Rancher Desktop

If you run Docker containers on an Apple silicon Mac with macOS 27, Oxcart is the fastest of the three runtimes we measured at starting, stopping and building them, and it costs $20 per major version instead of a subscription. The others win on reach: Docker Desktop, Podman Desktop and Rancher Desktop also run on Windows and Linux, and most of them bundle Kubernetes.

Oxcart 0.1.2 measured 2026-10-10 with its bundled docker 29.9 client; OrbStack 2.2.3 and Docker Desktop 4.94.0 measured earlier the same day, on the same Mac and harness, with docker 29.4. Apple M5 Max, 36 GB, macOS 27.2; each runtime set to 8 CPUs and 12 GB, one running at a time, started fresh with its own command; medians of five samples after a warmup; within 10% counts as level; one pass per product. † Docker Desktop has no engine-only start or stop command, so its start and stop rows include launching and quitting its app.

Level with the others (within 10%): starting an existing container with a published port, exec output throughput, container-to-Mac downloads, host CPU per container CPU-second and Mac memory per container. With no containers running, Oxcart's idle memory (776 MiB) is level with OrbStack's (792 MiB) and less than half of Docker Desktop's (1,745 MiB).

What sets Oxcart apart

  • Built for coding agents. A local MCP server with 13 tools, read-only by default and Manage, Full or Block per agent, with setup steps for 18 named agents. See Docker for AI coding agents.
  • Encrypted network path. Published and outbound TCP between your Mac and the engine travels in TLS 1.3, with a certificate made fresh at every start. See container networking on a Mac.
  • Your network rules apply. The Mac opens containers' outbound connections, so VPN routes, split DNS and Little Snitch or LuLu rules apply to them.
  • Offline setup. Nothing in setup reaches the network; about 2.5 s to prepare and about 1 s to start.
  • Polite with other tools. Another app's docker tools are never replaced without asking, Uninstall puts them back, and Oxcart makes its own Docker context current only if nothing else is in use.
  • $20, not a subscription. Per user, per major version; minor and patch updates free; up to 5 Macs per license.

Every comparison

  • Docker Desktop alternatives for Mac

The Docker Desktop alternatives for Apple silicon Macs in 2026: Oxcart, OrbStack, Colima, Podman Desktop and Rancher Desktop, with measured speed, price and trade-offs.

  • Oxcart vs Docker Desktop

On the same Apple silicon Mac, Oxcart ran docker run in 42 ms to Docker Desktop’s 143 ms and idled in less than half the memory with no containers. $20 per major version, not a subscription.

  • Oxcart vs OrbStack

Oxcart and OrbStack on the same Apple silicon Mac: Oxcart measured 5× faster at docker run, 23× at API stop and 16× at tearing down 20 containers. Where each one fits.

  • Oxcart vs Colima

Colima is a free command-line runtime built on Lima; Oxcart is a native Mac app with its own engine, an MCP server for coding agents and TLS on the container network path.

  • Oxcart vs Podman Desktop

Podman Desktop is a free, cross-platform GUI for Podman; Oxcart is a Mac-only native app that runs the real docker CLI, Compose and Buildx with a Docker-compatible engine.

  • Oxcart vs Rancher Desktop

Rancher Desktop bundles k3s Kubernetes for Mac, Windows and Linux; Oxcart is a Mac-native Docker-compatible app built for fast container lifecycles and coding agents.

  • Tools for Mac, Linux and Windows

Which container runtime or virtualization platform to use on macOS, Linux and Windows in 2026: Docker Engine, WSL 2, Podman, Docker Desktop, Oxcart, UTM, Parallels and more.

  • Memory and CPU use, measured

Idle memory, CPU cost of docker stats and memory per container for Oxcart, OrbStack and Docker Desktop on one Apple silicon Mac, with the method and how to measure your own.

  • Oxcart vs Apple container

Apple’s open-source container CLI runs each Linux container in its own lightweight virtual machine on macOS 26. Oxcart runs the docker CLI, Compose and Buildx you already use.

  • Switch from Docker Desktop or OrbStack

Move from Docker Desktop or OrbStack to Oxcart in minutes: contexts, images, volumes and Compose projects, and how to switch back. Nothing is replaced without asking.

Questions

What is the best way to run Docker containers on a Mac in 2026?

On an Apple silicon Mac with macOS 27, Oxcart is the fastest of the three runtimes we measured at starting, stopping and building containers (42 ms docker run against 143 ms for the next fastest) and costs $20 per major version. Pick Docker Desktop if your team also needs Windows or Linux, OrbStack if you want Linux machines or still run macOS 14 or 15, and Rancher Desktop if built-in k3s Kubernetes is the priority.

Which Mac container apps are free?

Colima (MIT), Podman Desktop and Rancher Desktop (Apache-2.0) and Apple's container CLI (Apache-2.0) are free and open source. Docker Desktop is free for personal use, education, non-commercial open source and companies under 250 employees and US $10 million in revenue. OrbStack is free for personal, non-commercial use. Oxcart is free for 60 days, then $20 per user per major version.

Which ones include Kubernetes?

Docker Desktop (kubeadm or kind), OrbStack (a single-node cluster), Rancher Desktop (k3s) and Colima (colima start --kubernetes) include it; Podman Desktop sets up kind or Minikube. Oxcart does not include Kubernetes: kubectl and k9s on your Mac work with any cluster in your kubeconfig. See Kubernetes on a Mac.

Which one is best for AI coding agents?

Oxcart ships a local MCP server for your containers: 13 tools, read-only by default, with setup steps for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, VS Code with Copilot and 14 more. Its crash diagnosis answer is 159 tokens against 2,014 for docker inspect plus docker logs. Docker Desktop offers an MCP Toolkit with a catalog of 300+ MCP servers packaged as containers, which is a different job: running other MCP servers rather than exposing your containers to the agent.

Do these apps run on Intel Macs?

Docker Desktop, OrbStack, Colima and Rancher Desktop list Intel Macs. Oxcart and Apple's container CLI need Apple silicon and macOS 26 or later.

How were the benchmarks run?

On one Apple M5 Max (36 GB, macOS 27.2), each runtime set to 8 CPUs and 12 GB, one product running at a time and started fresh with its own command. Values are medians of five samples after a warmup, and within 10% counts as level. Oxcart 0.1.2 used its bundled docker 29.9 client; OrbStack 2.2.3 and Docker Desktop 4.94.0 were measured earlier the same day with docker 29.4.
