Oxcart vs Rancher Desktop on a Mac

Rancher Desktop is Kubernetes-first: a free, open-source app for Mac, Windows and Linux with k3s built in and a choice of dockerd or containerd. Oxcart is container-first: a native Apple silicon app whose Docker-compatible engine was the fastest of the three runtimes we tested at starting, stopping and building containers, with an MCP server for coding agents.

Updated

Kubernetes-first versus container-first

Rancher Desktop is “an app that provides container management and Kubernetes on the desktop”. Its defining feature is k3s, “a lightweight certified distribution” of Kubernetes, running locally. Next to it you pick an engine: Moby, with the docker CLI, or containerd, with nerdctl. It runs on Macs with Intel or Apple silicon, on Windows and on Linux.

Oxcart starts from the other end. Most local development is containers and Compose stacks, created and destroyed hundreds of times a day by people, test suites and coding agents. Oxcart's engine and app are tuned for exactly that loop on Apple silicon, and the app is a native SwiftUI Mac app rather than a cross-platform shell.

What Oxcart does better for container work

The inner loop, measured

On one Apple silicon Mac, every runtime set to 8 CPUs and 12 GiB and run alone, Oxcart was the fastest of the three runtimes we tested (Oxcart, OrbStack and Docker Desktop) at the operations that make up a dev loop:

Oxcart 0.1.2, medians, and its lead over the next fastest runtime we tested
OperationOxcartvs next fastest
docker run --rm … true42 ms3.4×
8 concurrent docker run --rm96 ms3.9×
Stop and remove 20 containers77 ms8.9×
Build, uncached, local context341 ms1.2×
docker stats --no-stream, 20 containers1.0 s2×
Stop the engine28 ms32×

Oxcart 0.1.2 measured 2026-10-10 with its bundled docker 29.9 client; OrbStack 2.2.3 and Docker Desktop 4.94.0 measured earlier the same day, on the same Mac and harness, with docker 29.4. The engine-stop comparison is against Docker Desktop's 896 ms, which includes quitting its app. Rancher Desktop was not measured.

Compose and Docker tooling that just works

Compose healthcheck dependencies with up --wait, service-name DNS, init: true and network_mode: service: are verified, as are Buildx, Testcontainers and docker-py through the Engine API, and the Dev Containers CLI. The Docker socket mounts into containers for Testcontainers, Portainer and Traefik. amd64 images run through Rosetta. Guides: Compose on Apple silicon and Dev Containers and Testcontainers.

Agents, networking and security

  • Coding agents: oxcart mcp answers “why did this container stop?” in 159 tokens instead of 2,014; read-only by default; levels are a guard, not a sandbox. Setup steps for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and 15 more.
  • Your network: outbound connections are opened by the Mac, so VPN routes, split DNS and per-app firewalls apply to containers; the Ports view groups ports by repository and branch and says why one isn't answering.
  • Encrypted path: published and outbound TCP between the Mac and the engine travels in TLS 1.3, with a certificate made at every start.

Where Rancher Desktop is the better fit

  • You want a cluster bundled with the app. Rancher Desktop includes k3s and cluster controls in the desktop interface. Oxcart focuses on fast local container development alongside your chosen cluster.
  • Mixed-OS teams wanting one app. Rancher Desktop runs on Mac, Windows and Linux.
  • containerd and nerdctl. If you want to work with containerd directly, Rancher Desktop offers it.
  • Free and open source. No license fee.

A practical split

Many Kubernetes developers spend most of their time building images and running service dependencies, and only some of it applying manifests to a cluster. You can keep a cluster where it lives today, in Rancher Desktop or in the cloud, and use Oxcart for builds, Compose stacks and tests. docker context use oxcart switches the docker command; kubectl config use-context switches the cluster. Kubernetes on a Mac covers kubectl, k9s and which local cluster tools need what.

Questions

Is Rancher Desktop free?

Yes. Rancher Desktop is open source under the Apache-2.0 license, as of October 2026. Oxcart is free for 60 days, then $20 per user, per major version: not a subscription.

Does Rancher Desktop include Kubernetes?

Yes. Rancher Desktop provides “container management and Kubernetes on the desktop”, using k3s, which it describes as “a lightweight certified distribution”. Oxcart has no Kubernetes built in.

I only use Docker and Compose, not Kubernetes. Which should I use?

On an Apple silicon Mac, Oxcart. It is built for the container lifecycle you repeat all day: docker run --rm in 42 ms and 20 containers stopped and removed in 77 ms, the fastest of the three runtimes we tested. It ships the docker CLI 29.9, Compose 5.6 and Buildx 0.38.

Can Rancher Desktop use the docker CLI?

Yes. Rancher Desktop offers a choice of engine: Moby (dockerd), used with the docker CLI, or containerd, used with nerdctl.

Can I keep Rancher Desktop for Kubernetes and use Oxcart for containers?

Yes. Each has its own Docker context. Oxcart adds an oxcart context and makes it current only if the current one is default with nothing answering. Use docker context use to pick the engine, and your kubeconfig to pick the cluster.

Does Oxcart run on Windows or Linux?

No. Oxcart is a Mac app for Apple silicon with macOS 26 or later. Rancher Desktop runs on Mac (Intel and Apple silicon), Windows and Linux.

Sources and method

  • Oxcart speed: Oxcart 0.1.2, 2026-10-10, Apple M5 Max (36 GiB), macOS 27.2, 8 CPUs and 12 GiB, one product at a time, medians of five samples after a warmup. OrbStack 2.2.3 and Docker Desktop 4.94.0 measured earlier the same day on the same Mac and harness with docker 29.4.
